Fields of sugar cane still dominate the alluvial flatlands, cultivated mostly for distillation into the popular local ron pálido, or pale rum. Although once the mainstay of the economy, sugar production has declined rapidly over the last few years as tourism and the cultivation of subtropical fruits have proven to be more profitable. A wander up to the 10th century arab castle will reward you with some magnificent views of the mountains and coast and, for most of the year, you can clearly see the snow-capped Sierra Nevada glinting in the distance. The central castle patio also provides a superb and atmospheric setting for live concerts during the summer months. |
