Skiing

High in the Sierra Nevada, less than 36Km from Granada, lies the winter sport's resort of Solynieve. This is Europe's most Southerly ski venue and site of the 1996 World Ski Championships.

A wide choice of runs allows for skiers of all levels to enjoy themselves, from beginners to the more seasoned enthusiasts. The season usually starts in November/December and lasts until April or May, depending on the snow.
Visitors may be surprised by the benign weather throughout most of the season and the relatively high air temperatures when compared to the more Northern European resorts.

Lifts and cable cars connect the resort, at 2,100m to the second highes peak in Spain, the Veleta, standing at 3,398m.

Activities, both on and off the slopes are plentiful. Skating and cross-country skiing can be practiced during the day and when night falls, the aprés-ski celebrations keep visitors on their feet until late. Weekends and Bank Holidays are especially busy.

Night Skiing, is one of Sierra Nevada's most exciting features. Night skiing was introduced in 1994 with lighting along the El Rio slope (3Km/545 vertical drop). Skiing and lift schedules are established according to the time of sunset.

Boat Trips are available ar nearby Marina del Este.

Most sports boating activity takes place around the Marina del Este and on the beach of La Herradura. General Sighseeing
Almunecar was founded by the Phoenicians almost 3000 years ago and has since been occupied by a succession of Mediterranean cultures including the Romans and the Moors. Evidence of the areas importance can be seen in the numerous monuments, especially the Roman fish factory and aqueduct. The castle was built by the Moors in the 8th century.

Every Friday morning there is a large outdoor market in Almunecar town center.

Almuñécar is perfect base from which visitors can explore the local area or take an inland trip. On offer are some of the most wonderful sights that Andalucia has to offer. Spectacular mountain scenery, unspoilt white villages, unforgettable historic monuments, Europe's most southern ski resort... They're all there within easy reach of the coast and can be comfortably visited in a day's outing.

Local Excursions
As a small taste of what you can find inland, we recommend a trip along Almuñécar's fertile Tropical Valley, Starting in the rich fruit orchards that line the banks of the Rio Verde, this route can be followed high into the hills passing through the villages of Jete and Otívar, and ending up in the small but attractive village of Lentegí in the Sierra Chaparral. Following the road even further towards Granada, then down into the steep valley, you can visit the delightful Junta de los Rios. Waterfalls, rock pools and some magnificent scenery greet the visitor in this protected natural area.If you follow the Rio Seco instead of the Rio Verde, you will find a whole new countryside leading up to the Pena Escrita park, high in the hills that form the northern border of the municipality. Hiking, horse-riding and magnificent views await the visitor. Back on the coast and heading west from Almuñécar, you will find the Nerja Caves. This huge cave system boasts the largest stalactic pillar in the world and is as impressive as it is beautifully lit. From there it's a short hop to Nerja town on the coast or to the popular white village of Frigilana in the hills.
Ten minutes drive to the east of Almuñécar along the coast and you'll arrive at Salobreña. The old town, unchanged for centuries, clusters around steep slopes leading up to a picturesque Moorish castle which dominates the fertile plain bordering the mouth of the Rio Guadalfeo.

Fields of sugar cane still dominate the alluvial flatlands, cultivated mostly for distillation into the popular local ron pálido, or pale rum. Although once the mainstay of the economy, sugar production has declined rapidly over the last few years as tourism and the cultivation of subtropical fruits have proven to be more profitable. A wander up to the 10th century arab castle will reward you with some magnificent views of the mountains and coast and, for most of the year, you can clearly see the snow-capped Sierra Nevada glinting in the distance. The central castle patio also provides a superb and atmospheric setting for live concerts during the summer months.

Granada: The city in the mountains, is only 50 minutes away. A regular and inexpensive bus service operates between Almunecar and Granada. The city of Granada offers good shopping, vibrant nightlife and the magnificent Alhambra Palace.

Gibraltar & Morocco Gibraltar is approximately 3 hours drive away. An overnight stay in La Linea is very cheap. Stay in La Linea and walk across the border to Gibraltar for duty free shopping. Before returning home take a trio over to Morocco on the ferry.
